WE’RE ALL WORKING TOGETHER – Available Now

Sergeant Bowie and the Spider Team are searching through a post-apocalyptic landscape for the man who invented time travel and caused a devastating global disaster.

Sgt Bowie must go against his orders and send his team to journey throughout history in search of the one who may hold the key to rescuing humanity from the endless loop of destruction he set in motion. From a post-apocalyptic future, by way of 1970s New York, the narrative threads culminate on a doomed island sanctuary in the distant past and a survivalist tribe at the end of civilisation.

At its heart, it deals with the need for family and the emotional ties that bind them together but examines the ideas of fate, science and magic within a densely layered narrative mixture of time travel, world devastation and esoteric reference to David Bowie; a motif behind the narrative that echoes and reflects the choices of Sgt Bowie as he travels through time, drawn towards a single, shared moment in his family’s history.

Illustration by Curtis L. Fee. Original photography derived from Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kotov, Expedition 37 flight engineer, attired in a Russian Orlan spacesuit, participating in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) in support of assembly and maintenance on the International Space Station. During the five-hour, 50-minute spacewalk, Kotov and Russian cosmonaut Sergey Ryazanskiy (out of frame) continued the setup of a combination EVA workstation and biaxial pointing platform that was installed during an Expedition 36 spacewalk on Aug. 22.

It all goes back to music.

When I was writing this novel, long before I knew how it would end or where it would go, I knew it would be about time travel and the sense of loss that comes from dislocation from the present moment. I had this image in mind of a historian or archaeologist finding a tiny memory format and extrapolating the remains of our culture from this infinitesimally small sample. What would be lost? What could be inferred?

I considered the nearest memory device to hand, which happened to be a 128GB micro-sd card I used for my music player. It held the complete works of David Bowie, which covered 1964 to 2012 at the time. 48 years of material that seemed to encompass everything from our current age, like a hologram of culture, where any individual part could be analysed and would reveal influences that would span out into the far future and references that would trail off into the far past. The micro-sd card could easily have held the complete video works and transcribed interviews, the news articles and reviews. It would have revealed elements of fashion, art, literature and history. Tiny fragments, like clips of lyrics, would lead to a series of deeper explanations and descriptions of their hidden meaning.

Although I always listened to music whilst writing, I started to listen to David Bowie to the deliberate exclusion of all else; allowing the main characters to become equally enthused. This resulted in the chapter titles reflecting song titles and makes for a great playlist.
